Hanford, Kings County
Hanford has been the seat of Kings County since the county was carved out of Tulare County in 1893. A few miles northwest of town, a marker recalls the Mussel Slough shootout of May 11, 1880, a deadly land dispute between settlers and the railroad that inspired the Frank Norris novel The Octopus. Dairies and cotton fields surround the city today.
